Presentation
“When we are moved by the desire to trace beauty to its source—that is the call of meditation.”
– Rolf Sovik, Moving Inward: The Journey to Meditation
Yoga Sutra 1.7 names 3 sources of right knowledge:
Direct perception/experience, inference and scriptural revelation.
Today, my goal is to touch on each of these sources by:
- Pointing you to the Yoga Sutras for guidance on the purpose and practice of meditation
- Inviting you to balance the scriptural revelations with the inferences you have made regarding practicing and teaching meditation
- Offering you a direct experience of the roles of asana, pranayama, pratyahara, and dharana in creating the conditions for dhyana (meditation).
I’ll guide you through a mantra meditation technique called soham (“so-hum”-the innate mantra of the breath) that will lead you toward a meditative state when practiced with joyful sincerity and devoted attention over time.
Our sharing as yoga teachers is made potent by our personal practice. Therefore, I hope this will inspire you to establish a regular meditation practice—observe the process and reflect on the outcomes—and then share the technique as part of your yoga classes. This is the time to provide your students with the tools to experience cohesive inner quietude, mental clarity and transformed awareness that is so needed. Lastly, I hope this example of a very practical application of the teachings drawn directly from this time-tested manual for working with the mind will remind you of your wholeness, reconnect you to the resources you have, and ignite your desire to confidently share these essential techniques with your students.
